What I don't get however is how contagious it is. I keep thinking its not so bad, whereas the experts say it is.

....I believe it is........... in the first case in Westchester county of an attorney, at least 28 infections in his family, friends, neighbors, etc. were attributed to him. People who were at his daughters wedding are included. The guy who ultimately drove him to the hospital contracted it.........I think there are over 1000 on self quarantine based on this one case.......I expect very localized cases in my county within two weeks

> if [COVID-19] stays around permanently, does that mean it becomes like the flu, new mutations circulate each year? If that is the case, then the world will have a yearly more deadly flu season.

I think that is the case, almost by definition. If it becomes endemic, we will then have constantly mutating variants of this virus moving around in the population in addition to all the others that cause unpleasant illness and take vulnerable lives; such as common cold (another coronavirus, by the way), influenza and noroviruses (stomach bugs). Already, a flu vaccine just gives you a certain chance of fending off the particular strain of flu you encounter.

Even if the COVID-19 death rate is as low as 0.1-1.0%, as estimated in the tweet FUBHO shared, the upper range of that is a magnitude more deadly than flu.
