James:
Very much enjoy your comments and your observations.

I too have been impressed with the "rise of the local cloners" (of all sorts) and have been commenting on their impact on the box building game for a couple of years. They sure are innovative on the cost containment side, and most that I have met provide excellent follow-on servicing. I have not had much contact with those that have enjoyed direct Asian support. I don't get out to the West coast enough.

I totally agree with your comments about the CPQ direction and the reasons for it, (although the price paid for DEC seems steep). Margins are indeed as thin as gruel across the industry and CPQ has been moving up-market into routers and servers to keep the ASP's and margins from collapsing. Don't blame them. (It also is one of several reasons why I think CSCO will come off rather nicely over the next month or two).

Any management group that can take a round out of INTC the way the DEC boys did are also worthy of knowing (g)

Best, Earlie
