You hit the nail on the head. It isn't legal and no company is going to do something like this. Look at your scource (Herb Greenberg). He doesn't name his scource for this story. I think that sums up the factual nature of the whole situation. Just another helpful stunt to help the shorts, hurt the investors and further his ego.

I don't think it was a lie,
just a CYA that went something like this:

"hey don't go raising your estimate just yet.. Asian fun, VCD pricing is on the move (see ESST's writedown), and DVD is very competitive, so chill until we get through Q2."

I don't think it was two conference calls, but I don't know for sure.

IMHO:

It's quite typical for the individual analysts to follow up with the company right after earnings (after all it's their job, no?).
It's more likely that it was follow up calls by the analysts to the company (or perhaps the other way around?).

It appears that after these "follow up calls", some analysts were convinced that this year is backend loaded, that the revenue growth is expected to happen in the 3rd & 4th quarters. I heard this mentioned conference call, but as others did, I glossed over it, with all the other positive news. In fact, I don't recall any questions regarding this in the Q&A part of the call.
