He did get his notice of induction and had it postponed so he could sign up for ROTC here in the States while he was booked for Oxford. So then in what sense did he "flee" to England? I've never quite understood why he signed up for ROTC (known then as ROTSY), unless he already thought it would look "good" politically in later years. It certainly wasn't necessary. He had a student deferral. But hey. Was Quayle any better? Or Newt? The only one of the Biggies who actually DID serve in Vietnam was Gore.
