Steve,
Lucent like Nortel or Ciena is a DWDM "system" provider. ( They do sell some components though) Lightpath will be a DWDM "component" provider ( will they???) such as JDS. This announcement put high pressure on Ciena to come out 80 channels as well. In fact, most of the companies can demonstrate 40 channels ( no real systems running on the field yet )on the red band. Having not studying this new Lucent stuff, I guess they use blue band too and pump out 80 channels. If this is the case, the other venders should be able to catch up quickly.
The thing I didn't quite catch is 2.5G x 80 = 200 Gb/s. Where is the other 200Gb/s or LU apply its famous two polarizations and double it?
In fact, way back last fall, Nortel already have 10 G * 16 = 160 Gb/s. Not much response to that news. I guess news media didn't like Nortel control 99% of 10Gb market.
Let's see who will have the first terabit system running in the commercial field.
