Bill, I think Clinton was very evasive about how he explained his draft situation to the American people. He was basically caught in a lie, and then had to back track. It was not a pretty sight. I am not sure what you mean about his stepdaddy's pull, though. He was a falling down drunk, was he not, and not prominent in any way.

However, as I recall Dan Quayle pulled a fast one about his own draft situation also. It certainly wasn't just Democrats who didn't want to get killed in a war they didn't believe in. Of course, Quayle is even a little more hypocritical, because he plays the super-patriot when it suits him, but his rich daddy made sure he stayed in the National Guard in Indiana, if my memory serves me correctly.
