I'm a raw beginner at surfing. When I was last in Maui, the waves were huge but the wind was absent so all I could do was take out a small, safe foam board to learn to get out through the waves and paddle to catch them and ride on my stomach or knees. I needed the huge, beginner board to learn to stand after just one lesson on a flat day, but it was too dangerous. I had fun with the small foam board but nobody will mistake me for a good surfer!

On the trip before where I took those photos I managed to sail during that high wind and did good at times. I was sailing inside the reef early before it got really nasty and was making my inside jibes with a sail I rented from a pro with his number on it. People came up to take my picture as I made the jibes then it got nasty, I had a tremendous crash and they stopped taking pictures figuring I was not that pro they thought. Still makes me laugh...
