It's funny how one goes through life and so many things end up looking like a woven tapestry. Some years after I met Watson Jr., I became friends with with a person who had been IBM's top salesman. He was the guy who sold the system to the government for the Mariner program. As smart as Watson was, he still made mistakes in my opinion. My friend who was an extremely dynamic personality rarely worked after February because Watson Jr had a rule that no salesman was allowed to make over 40K per year in commissions. My friend could knock that off in one to two months. Watson Jr felt that salesmen should not make more than the executives of the company. But what this did was stifle the creative efforts of the best salesmen he had. It was really a stupid idea. My friend eventually left the company because he got tired of sitting around 10 months out of the year. So there you have it. The guy who was considered to be one of the smartest, if not the smartest capitalists in the 20th century made mistakes and that one was a doozy.
