we fought a Southeast Asia War--that includes Cambodia and Laos.

A Vietnam vet friend of mine maintains that he had a few missions that crossed the border into Thailand too. There were incidents of Thai civilian attacks on US bases in NE Thailand because extended families did not even know where the geopolitical borders were and we were kill kill kill of their aunts, uncles and cousins a few kilometres away.

Nixon got elected partially because he promised to "end" the Vietnam war and bring "law and order." People unconsciously associated Nixon with peace and/or winning but most importantly, and end to the (undeclared) war. Elect Dick and he would restore the power of the "silent majority" (small yak of my breakfast.)

Hubert Humphrey was branded the true hawk, and enabler to the hippies and socialists harboring those communists and anti-American radicals that looked different and smelled. 1968 and 1972 elections was all about branding yourself and owning the opponents perceptions, simply,
