Duncan,
Were you really lucky enough to have the same name as one of the best characters in "Dune"?

Re-Viet Nam war. After kicking the Japanese out of Viet Nam, Ho Chi Min asked us (U.S.) to help him set up a government based on ours. We ignored him and helped the French and their ethnic chinese cronies re-establish themselves as colonial overlords. Ho and his countrymen chased the French and chinese out of the north in the fifties. When the French gave up the US stepped in to prop up the same ethnic chinese that had been in power before WWII with French backing.

The point is that this was not a civil war but a war of independence that started when the French went back in after WWII, and had actually been going on for much longer against first Chinese then French conquerers.

Sometimes the lack of historical context can be breathtaking.

No, you defeat yourself, if you are going to seriously argue that a single, ancient culture which was artifically divided by French COLONIALS in the middle of the nineteenth century is actually two countries.

You have already made such an outlandish proposition by insisting that World War II in Europe was a civil war that I don't think this is argument is productive. I might go on and point out that even small European countries are all proud of their very distinct cultures, histories and customs, but I make it a habit not to waste my valuable time.

You reveal your underlying ignorance even further by being condescending and rude. Go talk to someone who is interested, okay?
