As a life-long Hoosier, you're wrong. Bayh's politics are very similar to Clinton's. He is an economic conservative but pro-choice, anti-private school vouchers, a strong civil rights supporter etc. Also, he gave the keynote speech (not a very good one) at the 1996 Democratic Convention and campaigned vigourously for Frank O'Bannon, now the Democratic governor of Indiana. While he is certainly no Ted Kennedy, he is also a far cry from Dick Armey. He is closer to Bill Weld actually, which is one reason I like him. He has no truck with the Christian Right and their agenda yet believes in balanced budgets (we have one of the largest surpluses per capita in the country) welfare reform, etc.

As for Gore, (who is not one of my favorites) my recollection is that he graduated with Honors from Harvard and went to Vandy Law School. If you are thinking that's because his Daddy got him in, you're probably right. The longest Affirmative Action program in the nation has been for white males who are the progeny of wealthy, politically connected families.

Gore flunked outta law school and his Senator father got him a safe job as a military reporter.

Journalists were by no means always safe.

And by the way, where were YOU then? In the front lines? I'm asking a serious question.
