But most analysts are skeptical about Alpha's future in the long term. Mike Welch, a consultant at Inteco, a U.K.-based technology market analyst, said he couldn't see a great future for Alpha "because I don't think Compaq will be stupid enough to put up a show against Intel."

So .. Are they mean AMD (W.J. Sanders " THE " III ) stupid ?

Hi Ali,

I think you are being a bit unfair. On one hand you seem to be attributing all of the $3000 to the PII. On the other hand you are reducing the cost of an MPEG/AC3 card (and drivers) to a $100 chip.

Fast CPUs allow software to finally emulate hardware at acceptable speeds. This is important. Software emulation and replacement of hardware brings costs down and is far more maintainable. MPEG is just the beginning. I think we will see a lot of PCs with high end CPUs and EMPTY expansion slots in the near future.
