I agree, the future lies in Intel combined with RDRAM (rmbs)- probably why Intel is backing Rambus

Software emulation and replacement of hardware brings costs down and is far more maintainable. MPEG is just the beginning. The single-CPU system performance is about to saturate. The CPU-centric solution will never be able to catch up with the growing requirements for overall quality. We saw the failure of Intel-centric NSP, failure of Intel-centric 3D-rendering with MMX. MPEG is the same. Softmodem is the same. The only way to go is a multiprocessor configuration. However, symmetrical MP are very inefficient on routined tasks like MPEG or 3D-rendering. The SMP is good to develop and try these algorithms. Therefore, the other possibility for NON-symmetrical processing is in order - that is we all have it now to some extent - DSP modem, 3D-accelerator, even all keyboards have a buil-in processor. MPEG is no different in this sense. The SoftMPEG has no future, only as a short-term marketing plug. Regards, Ali
