I'm with on many points.

re integration of things with the OS, MS is integrating its OS with the TV, and soon will, i predict, be integrating refrigirators and AC units into the OS. See, it helps distract people from the real issue, making the OS stable and reliable.

Ken,

Install Linux! I am really happy with my Linux setup. I have had it for years, but never enough time to configure it, until lately. I was constantly spending my evenings trying to get Windows NT/95/3.1 working (but you can't! what doesn't work, doesn't work.). Finally, I got so fed up that I spent a week reading about/configuring Linux. Now everything works, and I spend far less time fidiling with crap that I don't have the source code to. Now, I leave my machine on all the time, and when I go home, it'll be running, and I can do what I want to do instead of reinstall something. "Where do you want to try to go today?"

Ken,

I agree with you about the integration. I think the OS should be a small, highly efficient, stable peice of code that controlls the hardware for the software, and THAT IS ALL. I don't even like the GUI in the OS. It doesn't belong there. I don't want a bucket full of crap sold to me as a bundle for more than what its worth. I can buy the peices myself, from who ever makes the best and install them myself.

I saw Bill Gates on CNBC this morning talking about the DOJ wanting him to sell an inferior OS, and I had to laugh. I have never seen a CEO say something so idiotic. He must think we're a bunch of fools. I have absolutely no respect for him anymore. I have to go to lunch, I'm getting too stressed<g>

You know the problem! I have had trouble w/perpherial drivers too! I don't know whether it is the fault of MS or the perpherial mfg! I do wish that they would talk to each other! Besides that everybody that can make anything that plugs into any slot or jack anywhere in the system doesn't seem to realize that somebody else might also use that interrupt. The list of used interrupts is updated so often, they need a clearing house, instead of just picking the next available slot from that old list! I wish that they would get a grip! Who the hell is in charge of standardization anyway?

Problem is, I have this problem with all of the operating systems that support a wide range of products! The only difference is that at least MS is 'trying' instead of saying 'sorry, we don't and won't support that software. If you want to use it, use the old operating system.' Boy, now there's an answer that I have heard WAY TOO OFTEN!

As for software support other than MS, I get tired of having to pay (by credit card of course) for technical support which points out a BUG in their software, making their software unusable to me! So now I've paid for the software, and the support, which is unusable!

I've had pretty good luck w/MS until that last episode, when I spent 8hrs on the phone, only to be told that I had to reload the system! I learned alot about all of the places to go and look for trouble, and the MS support person (MS as opposed to Contractor) knew alot about it, the fact that he couldn't get a 'hold' of the problem after 8 hours sure showed the complexity of the system! Still I had to pay for the phone call, but at least NOT the SUPPORT!

I wonder when it will be perfect? Probably not in my lifetime.

Let's watch!

Ken
