The best performer in the TecWeb 250 goes to
PSINet, up 53.7 percent. It can't just be because it is an
Internet stock -- though the sector as a whole is moving
up quite nicely. No, it's because management has laid out
an aggressive plan to expand through 2000. It will pursue
market share, which calls for doubling of revenue in each
of the next three years. The company says it expects to
be cash-flow positive by the fourth quarter and earnings
positive by late 1999, and will spend aggressively in its
own fiber network (capital expenditures of more than
$300 million) to meet this plan.

The company says it plans to offer Internet telephony
services. It has expanded into Canada through its
acquisition of iStar, Canada's leading ISP. Subscriber
growth is better than expected in the most recent quarter.

Late Tuesday, 3COM CORP CEO Eric Benhamou said he would meet
later on Tuesday with FCC chairman William Kennard to discuss
regulatory issues holding up the development of high-tech
networks. Benhamou said that, at the first meeting between the
two, he would urge the FCC to accelerate the pace of telephone
deregulation. In a speech at the ComNet conference here, Benhamou
predicted a wave of convergence that would merge telephone calls
with data and video traffic on a single network like the Internet.
The most significant challenge holding up convergence was the
"lengthy transition leading to a fully deregulated telecom
industry," he said. (Reuters 09:41 PM ET 01/27/98) For the full

I read it in hard copy on page 8 of Network World
Feb 2 1998 issue (brand new!) today.

There are 2 great articles that take up the
full page.

1st article is basically about CEO of
AT&T plans to beef up AT&T's WorldNet IP services
with ATM and Frame Relay. Sounds like ASND is kicking
CSCO's butt here in that the Stratacom can't guarantee
99.9 % of packets to the user.

2nd article sounds like ASND can get into the Telephone
switch business and kick butt with V/IP smart access
concentrators using SS7 technology.

AT&T's 1st batch of order for CBX & B-STDX will likely be followed by many more orders as AT&T builds out its network in 98, 99. AT&T has said that it will spend in excess of $8 B to build out and upgrade its network in the next 2 years. Just imagine if only 0.5 % of that goes into NW gear for a total of $400 MM which would make the Williams order looks like chicken feed. In addition, the equiment orders are usually accompanied by training, support, SW upgrade maintenance contracts which increase the total value of contracts. I believe the next few batches will include not only CBX 500s, B-STDX 9000s, but also GX 550s and possibly TNT IIs supporting the universal V.pcm std. BTW, I don't know
if Gary (not Korn) will still believe that CSCO is the market leader in FR, ATM, ... after ASND has assembled an impressive list of top tier customers for ATM & FR such as AT&T, NTT, UUnet, Williams, GTE Internetworking (formerly BBN), Deutsche Telecom, all RBOCs such as Bell Atlantic/Nynex, Bell South, Cincinnati Bell, !NTERPRISE Networking Services - US WEST,... 2nd tier ISP & cariers such as Frontier, Infonet, Intermedia, China Telecom, Telewest...
