my understanding is that management evaluates employees according to contract... and unions assure the evaluation is done according to contract. is this true in your area? if so, it seems like your concern has to do with management, not the union. Semantics... or better yet believing in dogma over reality... think hard about exactly how unequal the law (rules) and justice (fairness) are in practice in so many cases in life... That is a large part of BLM in point of fact... Too often unions are places where folks of poor work ethic can hide and still get paid equally to those of great work ethic.. I come from a small biz family that when sold employed about 250 folks... so I know workers.. I have been working (really working) since 10.. Not talking mowing the neighbour's lawn or a paper route although I had those too... I have been self employed since 1992.. first in software now in retirement as a gardener the last 6.. I have folks whom I work with at Home Depot that ask me for garden work.. I pay a lot better than HD.. I see how they work.. I say I have no work and hire elsewhere when I have extra work.... it is hit or miss.. but I have a group that I regularly pick from. but working with the folks at HD.. the ones that have asked..I know how they work.. I see it.. their productivity, their ethic,. their sense of entitlement.. so they are already triaged out.. being poor workers.. yet despite no union they are paid according to scale.. there are so many rules to protect the workers.. even without unions. that are there rightly so.. HOWEVER.. these rules are easily gamed... very easily... It is poor work ethic ... far more than poor management.. Management is hobbled by both unions and government suffering for the practices of bad apples in management... Look at what happens during a work to rule action.. suddenly no one has a work ethic..
