Worswick and Peter, to both of you thanks for your stories on India and Zimbabwe. Actually, the story on India has rather shocked me. You did it once more, Worswick <g>!

But OTOH, we have have the luxury of choice whether to invest in these countries or not, be it a Coke that would like to enter the market with direct investments in the billions or we private investors via $5'000 in a mutual fund. There is nothing wrong in leaving these countries alone and buying stock of let's say GE or T. I understand that local feelings may not welcome western capital intrusion, know-how, MTV culture and "free-market capitalism". The governing parties must decide for themselves what they think is in the best interest for themselves or ideally, the people. However I doubt that locals feel better when ripped-off by other locals than by foreigners <g>. We cannot but respect their decisions and will allocate our resources elsewhere.

BTW, is Union Carbide still present in India? Did they bail out after Bhopal? Selling their stakes to local heros? I just don't know.

Thomas

How interesting about your African experience: what a great idea. And, oh, do I agree about AID.

For thos of us in America: How many places in the world have I seen US AID supplies, marked "Gift of the American People..not to be sold or bartered" sold in African and Asian marketplaces. Better, however, that some local merchant got it.... at the end of the food chain than the bureucrats who whacked most of the actual cash into their Luxembourg accounts, or Hong Kong savings plans.

By the way Mohan I was told when I was doing deals (or trying to do deals, actually) in Bombay that "S"..... the Chief Minister of Maharasthra was taking 10% of ever deal over a lakh, Rs. 1000,000 in the whole state.

Where has all that money made in a command economy gone? I mean your are talking about absolute truckloads of rupees here. Maybe a whole convoy. I suspect, for one, the Gulf. You've been in the middle east. Better not answer on second thought.
