British watchdog warns against Internet sperm

LONDON - A British government health watchdog issued a warning on Wednesday about the dangers of buying human sperm on the Internet.

The Human Fertility and Embryology Authority says on its Internet site there can be no guarantees that the sperm will have undergone the rigorous screening that all donated sperm receives in Britain.

''Diseases such as HIV, syphilis or hepatitis can all be contracted from unscreened sperm,'' the HFEA said. In addition there can be no way of ensuring that the sperm is of good enough quality to achieve fertilization, or even that it came from the man advertised.

Net browsers are invited to pay several hundred U.S. dollars to receive the sperm of donors about whom detailed information is often given, including sometimes their name.

In 1995/96 5,956 women in Britain were given donor insemination, resulting in 1,546 births, the HFEA said.

In Britain it is both illegal to store frozen sperm and for any medical professional to assist in treatment services without a licence from the authority.

The authority's website is on www.hfea.gov.uk
