Republicans used to have centrists.

The Democratic tents still contains blue dog democrats.

With few exceptions the Republicans have moved to right-wing purity and their weak moderates like Susan Collins are speaking ambiguously while voting with Trump and enabling McConnell in the Senate. And being willfully blind to corruption when an (R) is attached to the name.

The left cannot win national office without tolerating its blue dogs,. The far left will never accept this -- they are not able to monopolize the party as the RW extremes and certain paying lobbyists have dominated the GOP. The far left serves the Republican and Russian strategic objectives regardless of ideological well-intentions.

Imagine if the Democrats had a Roger Stone........ Or Wikileaks/Julan Assange working for them. Or if Obama "fell in love" with Kim Jong-un and had secret meetings with Putin.

This is a crazy historic shift that will probably swing back if we live long enough.

It is also possible that they have won and the US is in a long-term decline along with other large nations who tolerate greater authoritarianism and allow the constant process of improving democracy to devolve.

But there is a lot of diversity within the Democratic party.

You still don't understand how the wisdom of the crowd works. An election in the Democratic party if there is a choice of candidates and universal suffrage of the Democratic members can result in a near optimal Democrat. That is not good enough to run a country. That is just a subset of the country and it will always lead to strife, and deliberate sabotage, and at best a lot of passive-aggressive behavior. The case for the Republicans is identical

It could work if the parties were more or less random groups who just happen to vote at the same time, but they are not. They are self-selected to be different which is the nature of competition more than ideology. The general election will then always lead to a sub-optimal choice with a lot of the country unrepresented.

I sense you believe that finding the optimal Democrat would be a panacea for the country and world, but that is not true. By setting it up so that the government is always led by one or another non representative leader it leaves a power vacuum which is then filled by those with the money to push their agenda. The result is a small group of sub-optimal actors (both politicians and titans of industry) invested in their self interest instead of the aggregate self interest of the country.
