Gary,

The only way CSCO is going to reach the top spot in remote access concentrators by the end of the year will be by aquiring Ascend.

I know you recall that the last big rumor run-up (after LU, NT, IBM, BAY,& LU again) had Cisco as the buyer. Rumor had it that the place (Ascend, Alameda) was buzzing that Cisco was going to aquire them.

This is really not far fetched at all. And besides, CSCO has been awfully quiet lately. They are definitely due (for another big aquisition). Probably feeling a bit left out after the CPQ/DEC deal.

Larry

<<Even though Cisco has had competing products on sale for at least three years, it has never been able to move out of third or fourth place. That failure has been a major embarrassment to Cisco, which dominates nearly every other portion of the computer networking industry and which prides itself on its position as an industry leader.>>

I always read about Cisco's "dominance" in networking, but all I see or hear about is their routers. Will not switching (and specifically ATM core switching) become more important than dumb routers ? It would seem Cisco's products are a half-step behind the upcoming needs of the new fiber buildout. Does Cisco even have meaningful ATM switching products ? Is this just a case of "analysts" not knowing what they are talking about? I would appreciate input from some of the networkers here.
