Only reason I'm confident in my take on all this? A life long history maven & voracious reader on a few highly focused self directed research projects since 1968 B.A.

Was forced to trade for a living from home not long after leaving Merrill Lynch. 1981-82 Bear ate me! You know. The old commission quota thing full service brokers - back then - never ceased denying existed...))

Anyway, a few years later, because of multiple chronic health issues kept me housebound, began trading for a living. Like most small biz, lost money the first few years. Fortunately not a lot. Thereafter, returns took off. Even after living expenses, accumulated more than enough to live a privileged life style since retiring from active trading in 2012.

Back to the historical point: Posted 1st brief book list (on my board - end of 2007) evidencing how & why major civilizations, on all continents, in every historical period have collapsed. In recent years? Really is like watching a great film I've seen many times.
