Here is some info from article posted here today.
From dataquest

One factor for the market may be the industry's ability to squeeze more production out of existing capacity. The use of 0.25-micron process technology on 8-inch wafers can boost to about 1,000 the number of 16-Mbit raw dice per wafer, compared with about 400 dice with the earlier 0.4- or 0.5-micron process. Processing costs remain roughly the same, at about $1,600 to $1,800 per wafer.

RR
Maybe some can do some costs based on a more stable cost to
do one 8 inch waffer !

example:
At .25u $1800/1000 = $1.80
At .4 .5u $1800/400 = $4.50

richard, people are straining out nats and swallowing camels.

let's make some reasonable assertions here.

1. mu will have close to $30 mil more in depr and amortiz expense per their own statements. maybe $25 mil more, maybe $27 mil more, but definitely a lot more.

let's factor that into last q. let's take $25 mil (i always estimate conservatively). that takes off $0.12 from mu's last q. they would have "earned" (ha ha ha ha ha!) -$.08.

that was with an asp of $4.80.

well, prices collapsed since last q. now people are very excited to see the high $3.00s.

so, if mu is gonna earn -$0.12 (ha ha ha ha!) this q then their gross costs must have equally collapsed. like, cut in half. in three months. not gonna happen and the notion is absurd. 50% a year, maybe, but not per q.

therefore, the dog portion of mu is trouble.

now, i can't speak for the 13k people losing $300 million a year making flat panel displays. that is the wild card ;-)
