Adaptec's response to Ultra DMA:

Ultra DMA aside, I think our stock is going to tread
water for some time. What little momentum we had has
been squashed by these various lawsuits. I don't what
the hell to make of them.

As for my own take on this SCSI/UDMA controversy, I don't
know of a EIDE drive that can transfer 33 MB/s internally.
Plus the actual data throughput would be less than the
internal transfer rate. Simply put, the drive can't keep
up with the controller.

SCSI handles multiple devices concurrently. One device
does not impede the usage of another on the SCSI bus.
Very nice for a multitasking environment.

Nobody is saying SCSI is the solution for the average
home user. Leave the home Internet and Quicken user to
Packard Bell and their mediocre components for all I care.
You walk into Comp USA or Best Buy and none of the retail
PCs have an Adaptec component. They never have and they
never will. That's not their target market, and if it is
we're all in trouble, because it's not going to happen.

But there is a channel, a VERY BIG one, that of the high-end
PC. That sector that demands optimal performance in their
bandwidth solutions. My Seagate Barracuda coupled with an
Adaptec 2940UW handles my hardware simulations and CAD work
just fine. This channel combined with the server market
has served Adpatec very well for many years, and I see that
continuing going forward.

My two cents. Still holding...
