Problem with our horse is that it is tired. Too many obsticles in its way... 33 looking more and more like a imovable object. lokk at INTC and CSCO racing on ahead. Oh faith is such a chain.

Teri and all, >>H & Q, who was "nice" enough to telegraph
their "upgrade" ahead of taking the action
<<

I think they have a hidden agenda, as usual, and vigilance
is indicated, as always. From the Barron's story...

Hambrecht & Quist analyst Gus Richard, who classified himself as a bear on Applied about six months ago, says he has recently done an about-face and is "growing really excited" about the stock.

At least Gus Richard is not hiding his past bearishness.
Six months ago was August '97. I wish I had been bearish
then and had sold my AMAT, thus preserving the gains. ;)

Teri,

I see your point on waiting on the equips and yet I am of a differing opinion. If one was to wait until the BTB for the group or any particular company to get well above parity, and the horizon held nothing but upgrades and new fab $$, then you would be out of luck since it would have already been priced into these stocks. Buy at the darkest hour and hold on. We are already about 5 months into this bear market in the equips. How long do you think it will last?? That is the question nobody else can answer for you.

If you buy the ticket, at least enjoy the ride.

Re:So Gus is seeing push outs and cancellations GREATER than the total
revenues these companies had last year. And AMAT tells me they just
don't see it.
Is that what makes it a horse race?

All equipment cos. are not equal, either in management or ability to weather downturns. History has shown, without exception, that AMAT can weather these better than anyone else in the industry and come out stronger in the end. AMAT has proven themselves during rough times. Bet against them at your own peril IMHO.

Regards,

Brian
