No, there was not more vegetation around this home in the Angeles National Forest prior to the fires.

Outsiders don't understand the intense heat and hurricane force winds generated by wildfires in dry mountainous terrain.
.

Everyone else in this community built their homes at the bottom of their lots in the valley below, because heat rises. Only modest fire damage to a couple of homes in the valley.

Cindy wanted a great view so asked if she could build on the far upper portion of her lot adjoining the Angeles Crest Highway in the national forest. Los Angele County Planning said there was nothing stopping her from doing that.

Like most homes built in mountainous forest areas in the western US, this is akin to building your home near the top of a chimney. People love the views at the top of chimmnys - but it comes with intense fire risk.

.

When I was a kid my grandparents always had mountain homes in Wrightwood CA, a small alpine village with two ski resorts. Everyone in Wrightwood village knew their potential evacuation routes in the event of a fire. Every knew they had to leave immediately if the fire siren went off.

The town of Paradise had actually removed two lanes from their evacuation route to slow traffic through town and provide a lovely center median and wider sidewalks, and their residents died because they couldn't get out due to the resulting traffic jam. Many were so stupid they simply refused to leave.

People love homes built on the beach, but . . . you get the idea.
