is one of several hoaxes that get passed around SI and other places from time to time.

Rather than go into it, you will find information at

The general idea is that e-mail cannot hurt your hard drive, downloaded attachments may have that ability.

AOL (as well as IBM) has repeatedly called this "virus" a hoax.
