Alright, this is totally off topic but I am reading a wonderful book about Santayana, and I had this sort of revelation as I was reading in the car. What if what I am looking for, some unifying belief system (a la Joseph Cambell) can't exist because you are either wired for belief (and gravitate towards religion or an egoistic philosophy, or one with Platonic "ideals") or you aren't in which case you can only accept observation based real world philosophies, with a certain degree of relativism. Seems to me there would be an evolutionary advantage for the human species to come wired for different possiblillities.
