Book of Job which I read as a parable says stay away from evil and
fear God.. trying to get back on track...
now that Ramadam is almost over, will there be a renewed demand for
gold from those countries who have been celebrating the month long
holy holiday?
read in bloomberg that part of recent demand has been from jewelers..
Greenspan's speech left a lot to be desired..
unless the USA is totally a serviced based economy..those cheap imports coming our way should spell more and more layoffs and
less and less consumers buying those cheap imports..interest rates
going lower, suggests less buying from people on fixed income..
Egghead's announcement about closing its stores and just residing
on the Internet suggests more deflationary trends..long term could
impact real estate if more and more companies have to compete with
others who will do business with lower overhead..
good for fed ex though

You are dead on target! Drudge is driving the big media nuts. Within 6 hours of the Newsweek deadline last Jan 17th, when Newsweek made the decision to hold back the story, Drudge had it up in 2 inch type. Every reporter of any consequence in the US checks drudgereport.com several times a day. ole 49r, I enjoy your commentary...keep up the good work.
Regards
Michael

ole 49r---enjoyed reading your post and I too enjoy the Drudge Report. Today was the first time I started getting that sinking feeling that Slicky Dicky will get away with it again. Isn't it interesting how the network pollsters are trying to make it look like the American public just loves Willie even with his little character problem.
Sickening to think the American public is really that gullible.

Ole 49r:

"What makes Saddam any more dangerous than Kadhafi? Or Yeltsin?
Or Suharto? Can anyone shed any light on this one?"

I have some thoughts. He is the only one of the above who is more skilled at being a "master politician" (psychopathic character disorder)than Mr. Clinton - Saddam therefor becomes the most powerful personification of evil and has to be vanquished by Mr. Clinton.

It's like watching gunfighters from the Old West who had to go up against the fastest draw in town. Only when these two guys (Sadam and Wild Bill) draw their guns, they will be loaded with anthrax and radiation and the world is Main Street. (Maybe I see this movie 'cause my mom was born and raised in a lawless mining town in the Colorado Rockies and has told me about the drunk cowboys and miners shooting it out in town.)

So we have the choice between following the path of power of the illusion creators or the path of love(not emotion) of the truth seekers. This is continually being enacted for us on a personal and global scale so that hopefully some day as individuals (won't happen as a collective) we discover what a very wise soul was saying 2,000 years ago. To poorly paraphrase him: "My father is *nothing* but love" and you are to "love your enemy rather than kill him". He didn't say that because he was a flamming whimp, he said it because he saw that until we sheep of the flock realize this principle we have to stay in the domain of and be subject to the laws of the God of Job (vindictive, arbitrary, demands to be worshipped, and at any time will visit upon his best servant(Job)cruel and unusual punishment).

Anybody notice that the God of the Old Testament is not the same as the one of the New. A "God-fearin'" Christian is an oxymoron (maybe just a moron <g>, sorry) because he missed the whole message that Jesus delivered - why would you need to fear an all-loving God.

In a few weeks when we attack Saddam we will spin the wheel of destruction (in the ancient "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" way) once more and then as a society will disown responsibility for our destruction when it returns to us via the mechanical laws physics = cause and effect (spiritual law = karma), through terrorists and natural disasters.

For all those who have read this far and are pissed at me for this off-topic ranting - THIS IS TOTALLY ABOUT GOLD - and why gold will never become irrelevant and will always hold a supreme place in the psyche of the human animal. As far back as you can find in history it has held a magical and transcendant quality (read some alchemy) - because it is not just a commodity metal - in a world of metals (people) that break instead of bending and tarnish (become "corrupt" by oxidation)there is a shiney, golden, malleable metal that doesn't become corrupt - gold is a unconscious symbol for the soul of man.

Is it any surprise that the power brokers and illusion creators of the world don't want us to put value in or possess gold? Maybe something spiritual going on here, too.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Republican, a right-winger, or by the current checklist, a Christian.

Uh oh, big time>>Bank of Canada raise bank rate 50 bps to 5.00 pct
The Bank of Canada on Wednesday raised its key bank rate by 50
basis points to 5.00 percent by intervening in the money market.

The move effectively raised the central bank's target range for the call loan or overnight lending rate to
4.50-5.00 from 4.0-4.5 percent. The bank rate is the top of the central bank's target range for the
overnight rate, and is also the rate at which it lends to financial institutions in its role as lender of last
resort. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point.

The Bank of Canada said afterwards in a statement that the rate hike was designed to strengthen the
currency and rebalance monetary conditions.

Canada's beleaguered dollar weakened to historic lows on Thursday, in part because of the Canadian
central bank's decision not to raise interest rates earlier. The dollar fell to a low of C$1.4686 ($0.6809)
-- the weakest the currency has traded at since it was created in 1858.

''Downward pressure on the exchange rate for the Canadian dollar has intensified in recent days,
leaving the dollar at levels inconsistent with the underlying trends of the Canadian economy. Although
problems in Asia are likely to moderate the pace of economic activity in 1998, the outlook is still for
solid expansion in output and employment that will continue to reduce slack in the Canadian economy,''
the central bank said.

''In these circumstances, the extent of the significant further easing of monetary conditions due to the
recent decline in the Canadian dollar is not appropriate. This adjustment in the Bank Rate is designed to
rebalance monetary conditions and provide support for the Canadian dollar,'' he said.

Nothing but air!
