Spots, While I have not tried some of the other software packages that have been discussed on this thread, I can assure you that I a 100% happy with Meta Stock. Started off with 6.0 about 6 mths or so ago and just rec'd the 6.5 upgrade. One beginner to another <g> Meta Stock is very user friendly and has GREAT DOCUMENTATION and comparatively speaking I consider it inexpensive. FWIW.

One important point to remember you must have Data. TA is based on past actions. You want a vendor that:

1. Supplies all NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ stocks, most indices and maybe mutual funds.
2. provides minimal funnymentals and rankings
3. Has a scanning capability that can be custom designed.
4. has a basic charting capability
5. PROVIDES CLEAN DATA.
6. HAS AUTO CORRECTION FOR SPLITS, NAME CHANGES,IPOs.
7. has a means of easy conversion to the metastock standard.

There are two I like: Quotes Plus and TC2000 Pro. Quotes Plus has my vote for biggest bang for the dollar. Since you need data first get a data vendor.

I own and % of time used:

MSWIN 6.5 - 25%
Advanced Get - 40%
WOW 5.0 - 10%
Quotes Plus - 25%

Are there others? Yes, and I hope others speak up. A large number of the regular TA contributors use one or more of the above and some have other packages. a charting Package can cost from $100 to $2750, most provide demos or information on their web sites. They, like all software, have upgrades/changes. Each have weak and strong points. Our group is preparing a listing of software owned, it will show a diverse list. The decision should be easy, when you review the past posts.

I don't know of any changes in package choice. I have had MS since dos version 4.2, WOW since 1.0, GET for past 3 years, the Quotes Plus 2.0 Beta caused me to move away from the 7 year time with TC2000. At sometimes in the past, I have said WOW was the choice between it and MSWIN for wow's system testing of multi- stocks. With MSWIN 6.5, I believe it is the choice for the under $500 market, its indicator building and charting capability make it a standout.

DoI get paid for my comments? hell no, I think they make me pay more for their products.

Spots, Richard presents a balanced review of software and data sources. I have some stuff he doesn't mention... like SuperCharts and he stuff I don't have, like Advanced GET. But, the most valuable item in my arsenal has been the reservoir of tools to make those softwares do good for me that are found here.

The most supported software here is MetaStock 6, Quotes-Plus R1 and the beta called R2, and WOW Pro. That support makes a huge difference in the bang for the buck. I'm sure each item of purchased software I own has been paid for several times over in trading profits.

But, even more profitable have been the original scans, system test ideas, and original indicators invented by the folks who frequent this board and share them and then the discussions that follow. These generally are written for Quotes-Plus, MetaStock and WOW.
