Do you know how much CYMI made the first quarter of 1997?

Candle stick,

It's important to remember that we're dealing with a semi equipment company here. Cymer's results are much more positive than many/most other semi equip companies have posted. CYMI has sold off on catastrophic fears, but the actual announcement and the road map going forward, though not without bumps, is remarkably positive and upbeat.

The future beyond this quarter look great. I think analysts will accept CYMI's strategy for getting there and owning it. It is easy to get spooked by the historical beating we've gone through. From here on, I think the focus will be on the rate of DUV deployments, with a strengthening CYMI price as the year progresses.

CYMI's Conference Call:

At first I was disappointed with the outlook for Q1-98 but after thinking about it is not bad after all. Why?

1) CYMI will buy back $50M in stock price.

--a) This will prevent stock from sliding further down & discourage
-----shorters.

--b) It shows that management really care about their shareholders.

--c) $50M is a BIG number, about 2 yrs of CYMI's profits. A
-----committment of that magnitude shows that CYMI BELIEVES in its
-----potential and that buying shares will give higher returns than
-----buying bonds. MY FRIEND, THIS IS A REAL BUYBACK. Dilution due
-----to employee stock purchasing plan is inevitable in every company.
-----It is a motivational ploy to make employee loyal and work harder.
-----Employee gets only 15% discount to buy up to 10% of their -----paycheck. Dilution will occur slowly but nowhere 3M+ in a couple
-----of quarters.

2) CYMI still leads the market in DUV laser sold.

--a) The more lasers (> 10X their competitors) go into production fab -----around the world the stronger CYMI gets with plenty of PERPETUAL -----revenues from parts & services for many yrs to come.

--b) CYMI strengthen by coming up with new and improved products. -----This is very important to maintain #1 position.

3) 2nd Half of 1998 will be big for semiconductor. All analysts know
---this already as said by many semi-companies such as ASMLF, NVLS, ---etc.

Conclusion:

I believe CYMI's management has executed flawlessly. They have achieved all their objectives and maintaining profitability and leadership in the DUV market. Pushouts are just something that they can't control. Pushout just means that they will get their money a little later than expected. This will be good for them to take time out to consilidate and buy back some cheap shares. The $50M buyback will drive the shorters out. It will keep CYMI at least around $15 for another quarter until the big boys are back.
