the additional danger is of course my possible misunderstanding of the business, that it is in truth not an auto company, but a battery technology company with an auto sideline, or, worse, it is a spin business

as far as short interest in the stock, it is considerably down from high

however, I feel that the investoriates have been 'investing' in the call options in lieu of the underlying equity, never mind that they are in fact long on time-decay

Agree with most of that..

TSLA plays the role of a pace car. Without them, everyone would still be back in the shop just tinkering... which doesn't make the pace car any more likely to win the race. I've not ever been a TSLA fan...

Still, I suspect, on retirement Musk will upend Charles Mackay with his memoirs:
"Extraordinarily Popular: On Sustaining the Madness of Crowds"

The rocket business on the other hand... seems a much better fit for his style. Space X is about a WHOLE lot more than slick PR and a minor shift in style. Re-usability separated them from the pack... as a direct consequence of deliberate choices made that others wouldn't make, tweaking the culture of science, where that choice made perfect sense. That's mostly about "fail faster"... success in implementing that meaning getting there faster, and ironically, relative to those being more cautious, also getting there safer. Being up front about it... with the compilation videos of their failures... dismisses the stigma and dulls the sting... while leaving them FAR ahead of the pack now.

I'd advocated, some years ago, for the use of stainless... for the exact reasons they're adopting it now... only to have that be met, back then, by... basically... nothing but fear. Didn't matter that the work proved its merit... no one would take a career risk on something like that... just because it should work and deliver lasting benefits ? Musk's primary contribution is in restoring reason in judgement, along with a positive spirit of adventure... that has long since been wrung out of the bureaucrats in government and the leadership in most of the large corporations.

Bezos ownership of WaPo... these days knowingly printing deliberate untruths as news... proves a moral commitment to telling lies while seeking advantage, that now defining his brand. I'd not think that an issue that could be isolated from other decisions... so wouldn't trust him. Breezes . Currents. Holes being dug. A rocket that looks like a giant dick... and leaked photos perhaps making that appear aspirational... but, in any case, taken together, reflecting some obvious difficulties in judgment that are affecting a lot more than his personal life... IMO.
