No one will know for sure, it is sad that so many people died for no fault of their own and that is the most important thing.

It generated a lot of pain, sorrow and heartbreak and other unreported depressions and as a result sickness not to mention the loneliness of the survivors which has a negative effect on people lives

I do know of lifelong couples that at old age when one of them passes away within months his partner to life says goodby.

But "if they had the right treatment from the start"... mostly isn't possible.

The "logic" in the result is only "woulda, coulda, shoulda"... as it depends on something that didn't happen... that didn't happen for perfectly rational reasons... and if we did it over again... we'd likely get the same result.

You can't treat a disease that you don't understand well enough to treat properly... before you understand it.

Otherwise, yes... the risk today is modified by changed awareness... including having much better treatment options... but also in the fact that we have altered the risks through social distancing, which modifies the risks of exposure... limiting the risk of infection... and also reducing the intensity of infections that do result from an exposure with a reduced initial innoculum...

The "its not looking like that much of a problem now... so it was never a problem" crowd are just wrong. But, just as wrong are the "it was a huge problem before... so its just as much of a problem now" crowd.
