The January 31 issue of Billboard notes the AMZN has plans to become a music merchant on the Internet. Although AMZN has not officially confirmed the report, Billboard notes that AMZN has begun recruiting music through its Web site (e.g., senior editor, music; vendor relations, music; editor/writer, music). The report adds that part of the 75 million dollar credit secured recently would be used to enter the music sector. Internet music sales has a lot of competition, but great opportunity. One of AMZN's main competitors would be Tower Records, which saw its Internet sales increase 400% from December '96 to December '97.

The article notes that BGP is also planning a music/book site on the Internet at an unspecified date, but that apart from music (e.g. CD) tied to specific book, BKS does not have plans to enter the online music business. With its good brand image, a music/book one-stop site could attract much greater sales to AMZN.
