A republic means we have representative government. It not that we the people vote on everything (a true democracy), but we send representatives to government that make decisions on our behalf (republic). But the rights in the constitution protect the minority who are currently not in power in government.

Yes I have had that baloney tossed at me also.. thing is one person one vote IS a democracy ... folks who like memes are prone to that BS...

the details are in how the votes are used to elect representatives... a pure democracy is what you guys have on proposition this or that.. or our referenda up here on Quebec sovereignty and constitutional reform (Charletown for example) and your founding fathers did not want that as the de facto mechanism.. Wisely I might add.. they were 100% on the right track.. Hence the EC in lieu of a Brit parliamentary system.. BOTH are representative democracies designed to prevent the little guy from being overrun.. They did try to ensure a system that protected them.. the rich.. however the greatest fear was the rabble and plebiscite.. and in that they were again I say bang on although I have been critical of them.. they were bang on.. because in the end (now) they protected everyone...

this is not a bad breakdown

Key Takeaways: Republic vs. Democracy
  • Republics and democracies both provide a political system in which citizens are represented by elected officials who are sworn to protect their interests.
  • In a pure democracy, laws are made directly by the voting majority leaving the rights of the minority largely unprotected.
  • In a republic, laws are made by representatives chosen the people and must comply with a constitution that specifically protects the rights of the minority from the will of the majority.
  • The United States, while basically a republic, is best described as a “representative democracy.”

In a parliamentary system. the laws are made the SAME way

so yes.. You and I BOTH live in representative democracies :)

Your EC was the founding father's stab at a system similar but different to parliamentary.. with an equal goal... stave off the madness of crowds..

So I think my answer in future to those folk will be Canada is not a democracy either by your definition :)

I will add that the greatest fear in our Quebec Sovereignty referendum was the idea that 50% Plus 1 vote in a population of MANY millions of people would be decisive.. the trouble with Pure democracy .. Are there any pure democracies ? I guess partly the trouble with English being such an imprecise language... I ask are there any because all counties with one person one vote call themselves a democracy...

In fact we are both in countries that are far more democratic than the Greek ideal :)
