This is splitting hairs...and not a good one. I would say that what you defined as "democracy" is more accurately called "Direct Democracy" in modern times. Direct democracy does not exist anywhere outside of the smallest of communities and has not been practiced anywhere in the world for thousands of years (it had a very short life in Athens about 2500 years ago). So what we mean by democracy in everyday talk is "representative democracy."

The baloney of "US is a Republic and not Democracy" is that it is a stupid (clever if the speaker actually means to be manipulative) play on the words and their inherent ambiguity.

Now on to the real issue. The US being a republic rather than direct democracy was a design to be a system that respects and represents the opinions of majority while at the same time protecting the rights of minority and prevent mob hysteria from taking over the government.

By that definition the US has not been a republic for a long time because the GOP has inherently cared little, if any at all, about respecting the opinions of the majority. And if anything, they fanned public hysteria during 9/11 rather than curbing it. This lack of respect for the majority and propensity to be manipulative when it serves their interest is why GOP always clings on to the play on words that the US is not a democracy. The form of the US form of government is best described a plutocracy with some representative window dressing to fool the public.

By no means has the DNC been innocent. Successive Democrat administrations have been as active in kowtowing to the plutocratic interests as the GOP. They just have slightly different masters. Trump seemed fresh only because the establishment in both parties stinks so much.
