Dean and Neil,

One of the funniest cartoons I've seen was drawn by my good buddy, Tom Tomorrow (aka Dan Perkins). It's a four-pane cartoon and depicts a political type of earthling trying to expain the electoral college to a martian.

In the Coffee Shop Hot Links here at SI, there is a link to Tom Tomorrow's cartoons. The cartoon may be in there, but I haven't really looked for it.

Holly

We still do elect by the Electoral College. The President and the VP are the only elective federal officials not elected by a direct vote of the people.

In most states electors are theorectically free to vote as they choose, though some states require them to follow the popular vote.

I remember, for instance, that in 1976 one elector from the state of Washington voted for Ronald Reagan rather than Jerky R. Ford, who actually won the state.
