Sudanese army admits 23 men killed defending Wau

KHARTOUM, Jan 31 (AFP) - The Sudanese army admitted on Friday that it
had lost 23 men, including four officers, defending the southern town of
Wau against rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Army this week.

But inspite of the losses, the government had retained control of Wau,
the capital of Bahr al-Ghazal state, deputy chief of staff, General
Abdul-Raman Siral-Khatim was quoted by SUNA news agency as saying.

He said about 500 SPLA troops had attacked Wau at midnight on Wednesday
in an assault which coincided with other attacks in the same state
against Gogrial and Aweil.

On Thursday, the SPLA said in a communique that it had captured six
strategic points in Wau, including the airport and railway headquarters.

Wau is the second biggest town in southern Sudan after Juba still in
government hands.

Rebels in southern Sudan, where the population is largely non-Moslem,
have been fighting the government since 1983 in an attempt to end
domination by the Islamic and Arabised north.
