Gallup was a Kennedy pollster, was he not? Or was that Harris? It's late.

Did you know that at the time of Kennedy's assassination in 1963 that he was running behind Goldwater in some national surveys? Check out Time circa 1963. Anyway, the electoral map looked very bad for him.

Kennedy had great PR (hagiographer Schlesinger et al) but will ultimately be consigned to the bottom drawer of presidents.

Btw: That Gallup omits that Reagan was at or near the top of approval ratings of all modern presidents at the end of his tenure. Actually, I had read that he had the highest approval rating of any modern president on leaving office.
