Ah, but we'd have laughed and laughed in private. Actually women haven't changed; only male ideas (and idealizations) about them.

Another point that's perhaps worth making is that women perhaps have a better grasp of the motivations of other women than do men. I should think--be interesting to have done a poll; now it's too late--that far fewer women than men viewed Lewinsky as an "innocent victim" of Clinton's uncontrollable lust and all that... Unless you're dealing with a rapist, or with a group of aggressive men who'll encourage each other, there are a variety of ways of saying "No". And they work.
