LOL The maturing of a high growth business (equips) has been the result of market share gains by the best as the total industry relentlessly proliferates into more must have/need products. Meanwhile the producers of the retail end products continue greater sophistication and thus the necessary umbilical cord of monthly charges for updates. I can remember GM marketing making the insane "Green friendly" claim that people didn't have to change their oil as often with their "proprietary oil monitor light" that given spark plug firings and engine temperature, could go 10,000 to 11,000 thousand miles without an oil change. In about 2 years later V6's with metal timing chains started coming in the shop with sludged up engines and worn timing chains. (which last longer than rubber timing belts , but with clean oil). You point out the a fuel efficient ICE costs nothing when not being used where EV's need continual charging. Excellent point, I had not thought of that. I go a long time without buying a tank of gas (unless I had a long trip like yesterday). One of the major arguing points of why the ICE will be around a long time is the efficiency of storage associated with fossil fuels vs that of batteries (which are ecological disasters to manufacture and costly to keep charged). If GM made people pay $30.00 a month to keep their car running, there would be a class action lawsuit! GM was involved with GM PULSAT, now Sirius XM Radio. They give free service for a year on luxury vehicles and then make it optional for as little as 3-4 bucks a month for maintenance reminders, safety notification to 911 upon airbag deployment, and a gazillion channels of radio. GM marketing would die if they had to propose every buyer of a GM product had to pay $30.00 for software updates! Tesla just keeps on charging! pun intended. The big 3 make 10 million autos a year x's 360.00 a car. It's one heck of an idea! <smile>. I had a tour of this place yesterday: musclecarrestorations.com Six air conditioned shops. 22 technicians ranging from painting, to welding, to interior shop and parts procurement. They have a metal shop fabrication department that does the caliber of work like you see on Kindigit Custom show Bitchin rides! As we walked through each shop, I found brothers from different mothers in every shop. What a gear head reunion. lmao Established originally as a closed shop where restorations were completed on only mopars. I think I saw at least 5 426 hemi engines. They complete 25 to 30 restorations a year. Average time in the shop to complete a restoration is 2-3 years. They guarantee their work for 3 years and have older restorations come back 15 to 20 years old and do not show the past work. Truly a bastion of mechanically experienced technicians. They do smaller jobs as well suspension upgrades and rear chassis dynomometer tuning. I've talked to the sales rep for over two years, and he took my 55 nomad front end sheet metal to include with another car that is going to be acid dipped for rust and paint removal. I'll be the poor boy job of the year.<smile> It was very gracious they slipped me into an operation well beyond my dreams. Amazing the wealth that is out there. the labor bill on an average restoration ranges 1500 to 2000 hours @ 88.00 an hour Plus parts and materials, Custom leather interiors. I was in heaven and got out as quick as I could. <smile> He said the customers they serve have emotional ties to cars, such that money wasn't an issue - that was my clue to run! LOL Bob
