I lived in Germany '76-80 and spoke pretty fluent German. They had regional jokes that were about the same as our Polish jokes in the US, or Aggie jokes in Longhorn country. When I told the Germans, "Hey, we have a joke like that, but it's about Poles." They were aghast. They had so much respect for Poles due to WWII and following, that they could not believe we would tell Polish jokes. I was quickly contrite about it, and learned a deep respect for Poland and Poles.
