<<Novellus has a focused strategy to dominate the damascene world.>>

To dominate the "damascene" world, it would be advisable to have a CMP tool to say the least. Way back last fall, I watched a CNBC interview with CEO Hill who explicity stated that the only areas he would look for acquisitions were in the CMP and damascene areas. This interview may have started the rumors - particuarly once LRCX bought out ONTK - but since that time other things have occurred which support such an acquisition of say SFAM. I've heard that we won't see any activity until NVLS breaks 50, at least with respect to SFAM. I just wondered whether anyone else had more substantiated information. CC notes are good but they don't speak to how you plan to "dominate" damascene without a CMP tool, and I know of no internal CMP tool development at NVLS.

For the record, I am biased with long positions in SFAM and SMTL which I would ideally like to see under one roof. Just to further the rumor mill out, I understand that SMTL was approached with a buyout offer from NVLS because of their ECD technology but was spurned at that time.

Just one man's spin....SemiBull
