Well, as I said in another post- I've had students who have lost their homes- whole families moving in with relatives- some leaving the state. One student is now commuting from a different city since his family lost their apartment. 3 of my friends who started out as parents of students have lost their jobs- one at a winery that reduced staff, one at a preschool and one at a brewery that has gone out of business. And I know of several other parents who've lost jobs and either 1. not found a job or 2. had to switch to an inferior job.

My daughter's boss's dad just died and the mom is in hospital and the whole family got sick and had to go on steroids. Economic toll there- not sure how much, because I don't know what kind of health insurance they have.

We know people with small businesses who are closing them. One local store has been in business for 20 years, but they're closing now. I had gotten to be friends with the owner and his wife- since I've known them so long. It was not a decision they wanted to make.

So yes- there's an impact on people I actually know.

I know a dozen people who have had to move because they lost their jobs and had to seek cheaper
living conditions. One, a 46 year old woman with an eleven year old son is waitressing, working about
60 hours a weeks to keep the rent paid. Her son stays with a neighbor after school.
Some are living off their IRAs. I have two friends, two acquaintances who died from Covid. Two from my
high school class. One had diabetes, the other no known conditions but suffered a heart attack the
second week after diagnosis. Both were 73. The other was a neighbor's father-in-law I met several times.
Died Christmas day at age 70. Finally, a retired nurse who lives a block away, died yesterday. Don't know
if she had 'underlying conditions' but she seemed healthy when I would speak to her on the street.

The biggest difference I can see from COVID and the Spanish Flu, is that the Flu struck down millions
of young people, fewer oldsters, and of course our medical knowledge and technology has advanced since
then. There was plenty of denial of the 1918 flu as well.
