You should try something even more difficult than this:

Qualitatively and quantitatively they are completely different. I've argued with people (in the past) that the kind of belief that scientists have is usually the latter - and religious people - the former. That bugs them - they often said "they are both beliefs".

Point out that religious belief is predicated on faith, if they don't understand that, have them explain a chapter in the Bible: Hebrews 11. This is the Faith chapter in the Bible.

It should be crystal clear from reading that chapter, that Faith is belief DESPITE contrary evidence, and that this is what God finds worthy in the Believer.

So this isn't just "different" from scientific belief, its in fact the exact opposite.

Its astonishing how many Christians I've talked to about that absolutely don't want to face the facts. They don't want to think that their religious beliefs are not based on concrete evidence. Yet Hebrews 11 is all about examples of believers who clung to their promises despite the evidence being against them.

My best shot at summarizing Hebrews 11 is this:

Faith, is belief so strong in that which we hope for, that despite overwhelming contrary evidence, motivates the believer to action.

Tell that to a conservative Christian, and they will generally be appalled, yet that is exactly what the examples in Hebrews 11 are all about.

But, I have faith in my belief that no one knows, based on a lifetime of seeking.
