That varies by state. Sometimes the appointment lasts until the next scheduled election whether the class is due or not. Other states make the appt last until the class is up. Sometimes the state has the governor schedule a special election (that happened after Ted Kennedy died).

I see the AP has now called it for Warner too, and they are showing Ossoff as almost certain to win. Looks like only about 80K votes left, with the vast majority being mail ins.

The new Dem Senator has to be reelected in two years.

They set up runoffs in southern states to stop blacks from winning. The theory was that if a black won, a runoff would give them time to mobilize the white vote to defeat him. The opposite happened, a black man won the runoff. There will be NO MORE runoffs in GA. Watch how fast they change the law.
