robust DVD sales estimates:

TOKYO -- The market for digital video disk players
worldwide will expand to 11.53 million units in 2002
from 796,000 units in 1997, growing 71% annually on
average during the period, the Electronic Industries
Association of Japan forecast Friday.

It predicted the U.S. market would grow to 3.2 million
units in 2002 from 360,000 units in 1997 and that the
Japanese market would expand to 2.2 million units from
140,000.

Another big growth area will be for portable minidisc
players, it predicted. In this area, it sees the market
amounting to 19.76 million units in 2002 compared to
2.29 million units in 1997, resulting in an average annual
growth rate of 54% during the period.
