>>Do you think that by the 2nd quarter 1998 (according to Iomega) when Clik comes out, flash ram, memory cards, are going to be in the 10.00 dollar range for 40 megs?<<

Cheeky -

Just to be accurate, Iomega has said that Clik! will be available in the "second half of '98," not second quarter.

I do believe that flash ram will still be well above Clik!'s cost per megabyte whenever Clik! does ship. We should remember that flash ram does still have some advantages over any disk-based media, and therefore some consumers will be willing to pay more for it.

Re: Flash card pricing - Fry's had 8MB CompactFlash cards for $88 today. By the time Vapor! comes out 16MB will be $80 and there is no "drive" cost.

Re: Size - CompactFlash cards are about 1.5" x 1.7" x 1/8". If it is thought that small size is not important consider that even CompactFlash is to big to use in cell phones.

Re: Interface to PC - Notebooks-No problem, PC card slot is built in. Desktop PC-Parallel port adapters are available for $50 and slots are beginning to be built into printers.

>>Do you think that by the 2nd quarter 1998 (according to Iomega) when Clik comes out, flash ram, memory cards, are going to be in the 10.00 dollar range for 40 megs? I personally don't think you will see that much of a price cut anytime soon. But I could be wrong. <<

Vapor! has been set for "Second half of 1998", not Second Quarter. Big difference. How big? Well, "Second Half" could mean anywhere from a release of July 1, 1998 to December 31, 1998, and still be on schedule.

Flash is, and always will be more durable than spinning discs like Vapor! It is more compact, and uses less power. Will price be the equalizer? Bear in mind that portable devices are expensive, and this fact has little to do with any storage on-board. The expense comes from stuffing more and more powerful features into smaller and smaller form factors. Flash stays small. Vapor! is bulkier. The external Vapor! unit looks to be larger than many of the devices it's supposed to function with.

When I'm out with my new $2000 Hitachi MPEG camera/audio recorder, the last thing I want is to have a bulky Vapor! spinning disc whizzing away. If I were to jostle the camera during picture taking, all of those 1's and 0's could fly off of the Vapor! disc and start building up a residue on the inside of the camera, fouling up the electronics inside.
