Follow up for those who want to know how a virtual assistant can be useful. I am going to use Alexa as an example, but I am sure that Google's can do the same and more. Anecdotally, I'd say that Google's can do more especially since it can access the Internet and answer more questions, but Alexa is a bit more user friendly. I also prefer to say "Alexa" rather than "Hey Google".

OK, here we go:

  • There is a health hub that actually monitors your activity and will alert people if you've been idle for too long.
  • You can setup a list for emergency contacts and alerts to send notifications to several people at the same time.
  • Alexa can watch for break ins and fires while you are away. It is also going to be integrated with ADT home monitoring devices. Google of course has its own home monitoring (Nest).
  • Alexa can also be used as a phone. You just tell it to call Joe or Sally or whoever. It works for any phone number in the north America (and yes, you can also say "dial 555-123-xxxx")
  • It also works as an intercom. My kids use it to call their grandma half way around the world. And I use it for quick messages such as "come down to dinner".
  • Very useful, Alexa has timers and reminders. You can set a reminder to take your meds every afternoon at 1pm. Or when you have something on the stove and step away, ask for a 3 minute timer so you don't forget about it. You can even link your calendar and ask it what's next on your to-do/calendar.
  • Two other features that I like are the weather report and my morning updates. Once set up, Alexa will tell you about how your sports teams did and what is new in your local news (or national news depending on what you have set up).
  • Finally, it can act as a radio. You just tell it which station you want and it tunes into it. You can also browse by station type (Alexa give me German radio or whatever).
