Fred and Intel Late Nighters - A New Chip Set From Intel is In The Works.

Within Intel, a new Deschutes chip set is being designed, internally known as Whitney.

Whitney is a chip set that will be combining a 100 MHz (and higher) 440BX chip set along with Intel's yet-to-be-introduced i740 AGP graphics processor.

Both of these (440BX and i740) will be introduced separately - and are manufactured on Intel's 0.35 micron process.

I expect these two chips to be combined on Whitney but to use the new 0.25 micron process - to keep the die size small, and hence keep costs down but increase performance.

The Whitney will be Intel's second thrust into the low cost PC arena - the first will be Covington.

I'm not sure what audio support, if any, will be part of the Whitney chip - I expect to hear more on that in the near future.

The combination of Covington and Whitney, along with an audio chip (assuming Whitney isn't given audio capability) will form the basis of an integrated solution to compete with the relatively slow MediaGX, made by the CPU company formerly known as Cyrix.
