Here's what I was refering to with the L2 cache and covington. Help me out a little.
heise.de

Refering to Covington and Mendocino...

"Both need a low-cost chipset, of course, because boards based on the presently favored
440LX are simply too expensive. Therefore Intel is currently developing a slimmer version
under the codename '440LX-R', that is supposed to be about 20 US-$ cheaper than the 440
LX. It will ship together with ACPI-bug-free PIIX4e under the product name 440 EX in
June. The new chipset will only be able to control two DIMM sockets and a maximum of
three PCI-Master-Slots. The Dual-Processor support and the ECC error correction for the
main memory will also fall victim to the rationalization measures..

Intel did not add an option to the 440EX that would allow installing an external L2 cache on
the board. Therefore the Covington processor runs without any L2 cache at all, which makes
it several classes slower than for example the new K6-266 from AMD.

According to rumors the currently 440EX chips that are shipped to the board manufacturers
are fully functioning 440LX components, that have been robbed of their features with a
bondout-option, meaning the wirings of the chip with the casing connection were changed.
We will have to wait and see whether this will also be the case for the mass production.
